British Athletics Championships Sunday 25th August 2019
For the past three or four months I have been working on a documentary about marathon runner Hayley Carruthers. I’ve been tagging along to training sessions down at the track, local races in Tipton and at the University of Birmingham, and to her big events as well. This season’s key diary dates have included Highgate 10,000m at the start of July and the 5000m at the British Championships at Alexander Stadium this weekend gone.
Sadly a few clashes in my diary with weddings have meant I’ve also missed a few key races including the English Championships at Milton Keynes at the end of July, but thankfully I was able to be there on Sunday for the British Championships and to get media accreditation in time to have proper access. Unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to film anything inside the stadium as the BBC were present, but through photographs I documented Hayley’s race and a few other events taking place throughout the afternoon.
I’m a documentary filmmaker and a portrait photographer rather than a dedicated sports photographer, so slipping into the world of sports photography this summer has been a different but interesting and enjoyable experience for me. We’re nearing the end of filming for the documentary, and I’ll share more about the film later this year once I have put it together. For now, I wanted to share some of my favourite images from Sunday’s British Championships. There are many more photos up on my Athletics and Cross Country Flickr account, and I have chosen to make them available under a Creative Commons licence allowing non-commercial use of the images so long as attribution is provided alongside the images. A simple link back to my website or Instagram is great.
